Ipswich council in Queensland wins right to recruit for female-only training roles




A training program with a Queensland council providing an opportunity to drive a garbage truck will only be available to women.

Ipswich City Council says it has won an exemption from the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission (QIRC) to advertise for the gender-specific opportunity.

The council was motivated by the lack of women in similar roles, with just one female among its 50 full-time waste truck drivers.

“Our workforce should reflect the wider Ipswich community, and that creating pathways for more women to become drivers in the waste truck fleet will support this,” council chief executive David Farmer said.
